The doctrine of the Trinity is nowhere explicitly stated in the Bible, but is rather attested to by early Christian tradition, especially in various creedal formulations, epitomized in the Nicene Creed, which dates from the 4th century. The historical precursors of the Unitarians, by the way, would have been known as the Nestorians, who believed that Christ was "God- inspired", but not literally "The Son of God". The Arians, against whom the Nicene Creed was promulgated, believed that Christ was an exalted creature, a sort of super- angel. In any event, Protestants generally accept the doctrine of the Trinity as a reasonable inference from Scripture, and a sanctioned interpretation.
