Wayne, Food and energy prices are totally unrelated because they are rapidly going up in price and there is no inflation. Haven't you ever taken a Logic course? <vbg>

Let's see. I have $100 to spend. Food and energy took $20 last period and this period they take $24. It is obviously low inflation that is causing me to only bid $76 for non-essentials on which I was willing to pay $80 last period.

I think you've hit upon a kink in the core vs. total number.
