Interesting "...to-be-liberated list." Sometime, when you want a break from E. Timor, I would be interested in your views re difference (if any) in colonization, occupation and settlement.

At some point, the original (or just "those who were there" when the white guys showed up) inhabitants become a chapter in the history book and perhaps something to be exploited by the tourism industry.

For instance, I doubt NZ and Australia are any more likely to return control and real estate to Maori and Abo people than the U.S. is to tell the Ogalala Sioux to step up to the plate and get theirs.

All this talk of islands reminds me that I've been meaning to ask if you read "The Happy Isles of Oceania", Paul Theroux. Wonder what degree you might share perspectives with your fellow "paddler."
