Defects Plague The Dreamcast Launch Other Stuff Thursday, September 09, 1999 -- 5:00:00 PM By: Hi-Fi Just when you thought everything was going to go off without a hitch, 9-9-99 hits and chaos ensues. First, stores were left opening without a full complement of product, and now it appears a huge number of defective discs have found their way onto the shipping docks. When GameFan received our final US products, and found that several would not work on our official US Dreamcast machines at all, we were assured by Sega that this problem was limited to those CD's released early for evaluation. As it turns out, that is not the case.
We phoned Sega to see what the story is, and they confirmed the list of defective discs that were released this week. The list includes: Blue Stinger, Ready 2 Rumble, Hydro Thunder, Sonic Adventure, and the DC Web Browser disc. From what we're told by Sega representatives, one of their pressing houses released a batch of CD's that was defective, which is the source of the defects which are currently falling into the hands of disappointed Sega fans. Sega was keen to stress that this problem does not affect every copy released, just the quantity that were shipped from the faulty pressing plant. Sega is taking quick steps to ensure that plenty of working game software hits store shelves in short order.
In the meantime, Sega urges anyone who has received a defect to immediately return it to the store they purchased it from, or call Sega Customer Service toll-free, at 1-800-USA-Sega. Those whose browser software refuses to load are being told to E-Mail Customer Support, support@sega.com, with the subject heading Dreamcast Browser... they'll get you taken care of. It's unfortunate that defects have had such a negative effect on so many gamers' enjoyment of this hardware launch, but Sega points out that the problem will be corrected for any customer with a defect - nobody will be left with non-working game CD's. |
