U.S.-Russia to cooperate on Y2K missile warning
WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The United States and Russia will sign an agreement in Moscow next week for their military officers to jointly staff a center in Colorado as the new year dawns to watch for any false warnings of missile attacks sparked by year 2000 computer problems, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The agreement will be signed on Monday by U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen and Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev during a visit by Cohen to bolster U.S.-Russian defense cooperation, a senior Pentagon official told reporters.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said that up to 20 Russian officers will travel to the temporary ``Center for Strategic Stability and Y2K' to be set up at U.S. Space Command headquarters at Colorado Springs. Formal agreement for the center was reached in August, he said.

The center -- to be staffed from late December through early January -- will utilize U.S. satellites to watch for indications of missile launches by or against either country. The confidence-building step is based on the reliability of U.S. computers and could be used to reassure Moscow if Y2K computer problems there mistakenly indicated a launch.

``The Russians have agreed that this facility should be established and have agreed to participate in it,' the official said. ``Secretary Cohen and Minister Sergeyev will be signing the joint statement in Moscow committing the two sides to proceed with this particular effort associated with our wider set of cooperation on Y2K.'

``It will be jointly manned by Russian and American military personnel to monitor potential early warning data -- launch detection data -- provided by the United States in the time frame from the later part of December into the early part of January,' the official said.
