The risks have not stopped companies from rapidly expanding in hopes
of persuading shoppers to defect from the neighborhood grocer.
Streamline's revenues more than doubled in the latest quarter, to $3.63
million, but it lost $4 million, compared with $2.6 million a year earlier, in
large part because of investment spending. Now the company, which
raised $42 million in a public stock offering in June, is accelerating its
national growth even more.

Streamline's initial strategy was to operate in 7 to 10 markets by the end
of 2001 and 13 markets by 2004, but the company has revised the plan
to capture the momentum of greater-than-expected consumer demand
and changing market conditions. The company, based in Westwood,
Mass., now expects to be in 20 markets by 2004.
