Here's another but these are true stories:

An unemployed auto worker and friends are at a bar. They are drunk and one starts complaining about the Japanese. He sees another patron who he thinks looks Japanese and starts hurling insults and threats. The patron, who is not Japanese but an American with Chinese heritage talks back. A short scuffle ensues. It is broken up. All parties depart. Dissatisfied, two of the auto workers drive off. After driving around for 20 minutes the two, now armed with a baseball bat, go in search of the "Japanese" and proceed to beat him to death with the bat, despite his vain attempts to flee from them.

The auto workers were arrested. Despite prior records of violence, they receive a sentence of 3 years probation and a $3,700 fine.

In the other case, a teen-aged black male driver is playing a childish car game. The signals on a major thoroughfare are "timed" so that if you miss one and observe the speed limit you will miss all of them for a few miles. The game is to get into the intersection just before the light turns red, while the light is still yellow. A white couple are traveling on a cross street to the nearest hospital as she is in labor. Two cars, traveling at relatively high rates of speed (about 40) enter the intersection simultaneously and collide. The mother and child die instantly.

The teenager, an average student with no prior record, is accused of murder and tried as an adult. He is sentenced to 25 years-to-life for his reckless disregard for public safety although witnesses did disagree whether the light was yellow or red when he entered the intersection.
