Well, they were more respectable than that, but they were our first notable persons of bohemian opinion.....Have you ever read "The Bostonians", a novel by Henry James, and one of his more straightforward works? Merchant/Ivory made a decent version out of it, with Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Reeve, and Linda Hunt. It depicts a society of "free- thinkers" and faddists that would be recognizable in most college towns. It forces one to realize that things have not changed as much as may be thought......
