not a good day for holders- POTASH CORP SASKATCHEWAN (52-3/4, down 4 @ 10:58 ET) said it would permanently close two U.S. nitrogen plants and cut its third-quarter profit estimates in half. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based fertilizer company said it would shut down plants at Clinton, Iowa and LaPlatte, Nebraska, that it had idled on August 12. It said that after reviewing market conditions, it had concluded that neither could be run competitively. It said that this shutdown of 420,000 tonnes of ammonia capacity, along with other recent industry closures, had reduced overall North American capacity by about 20 percent.
