Clinton's resolve has stiffened, and contrary to Cohen's claims that the USA would sleepwalk through APEC discussions on Timor, Indonesia is now being put through the grilling machine.

The UN, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Uncle Tom Cobbly and all, [not sure that China has changed their minds] are now loading up on Indonesia which is being instructed to immediately allow a UN presence in Timor or face possible accusations of crimes against humanity. Which is not a pretty charge these days for leaders of countries to face.

Appeasement does not work and it is good that the civilized world has come to its senses at a stage too late for 100s and thousands of Timorese who died in vain at the end of the bloodiest century in human history. A forceful UN intervention preliminary to the referendum on independence would have forestalled the murdering.

Jiang Zemin will in a few hours be talking to Bill. Taiwan will be on the schedule I'm sure. Clinton's stiffened resolve is a good thing. Jiang must not think that he can simply annex Taiwan by violence. He must now know that the world is united and It will not take kindly to usurpation of It's authority.

Must go watch the welcome!
