Well, that was fun! There was none of the usual military guard of honour nonsense. There was the usual lineup of ambassador, head of state, prime minister etc, then a Maori challenge [though just an advance guard really because the official challenge is later], then happy Polynesian clap dance and singing.

It was all smiles and happiness on a better day than it's possible to make. Really friendly, nice welcome. Makes me pleased to be a Kiwi.

So my wife and I zoomed up the road and joined the throngs on a motorway overbridge 300 m away to await the motorcade. Me with my United Nations flag on a broomstick blowing in a gentle zephyr of breeze, just enough to lift it nicely above the crowd.

Police all nice and friendly, crowd happy and expectant. First you see the helicopters [motorway closed] then the line of cars comes zooming by!

I even got to make an impromptu talk to a TV cameraman. I hope they excerpt the good bits if they use it!

So, Clinton is now in my home town.

Now, where's Jiang Zemin?

With Timor already pretty much sorted out - other than Indonesia caving in and actually getting the UN troops there and quickly, the way is clear for some good Zemin/Clinton talks.

Expect good news!

It's not possible to be a belligerent misery guts on a day like today.

Must go check out the local scene some more.

[Next time I'll have a longer broomstick so my arms don't get so tired].

So far, so good!

Maurice
