<However, for high-performance their Wildfire platform is set to roll in a couple months with 700+ EV67 (21264A).>

How much is such a system going to cost, and how many processors will it have? Compaq's new 8-way Xeon Profusion server is going for $85K.

<Wildfire comes alive late next year early 2001 with 21364.. point to point CPU to CPU 12 Gig/sec CPU to CPU. Glueless SMP, i.e. "built-in" chipset. Real cheap servers. Wildfire is a natural but very nicely priced 4 CPU servers with 21364.>

I'll give you this one. A four-way Alpha 21364 system is sure to be a very compelling platform that can give Merced and 460GX a real challenge. (But by then, McKinley will be right around the corner.)

Just one nitpick, though. The Wildfile platform will still need a chipset, mainly for I/O buses like PCI, PCI-X, and maybe SIO (the merged FIO and NGIO technology). And Merced is also "glueless SMP," although the memory controller is on the chipset, not on the processor die like the Alpha 21364.
