Then again...

If on 1st weighing, ABCD vs EFGH, ABCD is heavier,

Weigh ABE vs CDF.
If ABE is heavier, weigh A vs B;
Whichever is heavier is fake. If balanced, then
F is lighter.
If CDF is heavier, weigh C vs D;
Whichever is heavier is fake. If equal, then
E is lighter.

If ABE = CDF, then
Weigh G vs H; whichever is lighter is the culprit.

On the above, if EFGH was heavier, use the same procedure as above, but draw from the opposite sets.
