The last IDC report measuring shipping commercial servers had NT at about 35% and Linux at 17% (number of units shipped). This report was from the end of 1998, and had measured a growth-rate of over 200% for Linux. Considering the incredible amount of press/hype that Linux has received just in the past year, I'll assume that the IDC report for this year will show a similar growth for Linux, possibly matching or overtaking NT in number of units shipped for 1999.

Maybe the 47% number you saw referred to revenue instead of number of units...
