an irc command similar to dcc is "/msg". perhaps you've used it. by typing "/msg" (minus the quotation marks) and the person's nick and the message, upon hitting 'enter' they will receive a small box at the bottom of their irc screen with your nick in it. they can then click on it to open it and converse with you in a private window or click on it to close it. thereafter, it is not necessary to type "/msg" for each line of text. for instance, if you wished to send a message to clarence here is the format:

/msg clarence hi, how the heck are you? [enter]

to try this out you can 'message' yourself to see the effect. don't do it too often or you might go blind.

i'd say most of the "bombardments" people receive in irc (if you go to one of the zoo-like public channels) are messages such as i've described. a dcc request must be accepted by being acknowledged.

:)
