Pc-plus & Swisscom Plan WAP Directory for Telecom 99

By Vanessa Clark
10 September 1999

Pc-plus Informatik AG and Swisscom Directories Ltd will pilot a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) directory service at the Telecom 99 exhibition in Geneva next month.

The service will allow users to access Swisscom's directory databases using WAP-enabled mobile phone and then dial the number with a single key-press.

Pc-plus's software, IDA.wap (Internet Directory Access with WAP), allows the WAP gateway to access online directories using standard protocols like E.115 and EDA. pc-plus claims its software is compatible with almost all directory access databases worldwide.

The service will be offered free at the exhibition. After the pilot, charges will depend on the individual carrier's business model, said a Pc-plus spokeswoman. She said Swisscom has not confirmed whether it would continue with the service after Telecom 99, but it seems a "logical consequence".

One problem the companies may come up against is the shortage of WAP devices around to access the service. Nokia is only expected to release its 7110 WAP phone next month. The spokeswoman said the companies will be making a limited number of phones available at the pc-plus show stand.
