By that reasoning practically any metallic element should work, even such everyday metals as iron, calcium, potassium, and sodium.

This is a good point and it's possible that other metals might work as well. And then again, the unique molecular structure of zinc might allow it to bind chemically to the rhinovirus or nasal ICAM receptors whereas other metals don't bind. This is a good question for someone with a strong chemistry background.
