I think too much attention is being paid to the Paul Allen factor. Vulcan Ventures has invested in several dozen companies (as a VC investor). As a high % of them are in the internet arena, don't be surprised if Vulcan Ventures owns parts of companies which are in the same field.

Vulcan Ventures owns only around 5% of PCLN on a diluted basis. If people think that this will cause MSFT to rethink their strategy, I think they will be disappointed. A 500 billion market cap company like MSFT does not care about the future of investments (currently valued at 500 MM) by one of its co-founders.

An example -
Paul Allen has a stake in STMP ( stamps.com )
MSFT has a stake in its competitor ( e-stamp.com )

Delta has a bigger stake in PCLN that Vulcan Ventures. Delta's PCLN holdings amount to more than 10% of Delta's market cap. Delta sells tickets through other PCLN competitors and other channels.

Regards,
Rajiv (short PCLN)
