I see them as cultural/political operatives with a clear agenda in mind; that is to strip the bible of any mystical significance.

Since I just posted to jbe about Ian Barbour, I suppose I should comment on this too...

For some reason unknown to me, defense of the bible as the key historic document, for all species and all worlds at all times seems to be the mantra of many religious leaders today. This I do not understand. I wonder about the bible and its "mystical significance", as you say, but even if so how does this rate in terms of significance vs. the creation of the universe, for example? Questioning the bible and its relevance across all worlds and all times will almost always result in that individual being called an atheist. I have to tell you, I honestly believe the reason for the bible's overweighted focus from the religious leaders is because they don't have the educational background to look at the big bang and who created it. So instead they focus on a book that we know was written by men. OK thats all from me on this, because I know its a black hole (pun intended)...
