Yes. It's clear that Microsoft is going to buy its way into the set-top box market place, using the pile of cash they have accumulated from their desktop dominance.

However, Microsoft Windows variants are inherently insecure, and have been subject to multiple successful attacks over the Internet in recent months. There is a real possibility that this will be a severe problem with Windows CE in set-top boxes, and unless addressed directly this will derail their efforts. Even without direct external attacks, simply upgrading software in a Windows variant can destabilize a system and make it useless. So the cost of maintenance and deployment will be large.

An alternative approach (Java + VxWorks) is inherently secure, both from attach and from upgrade failures. It is my bet that this combination will succeed, perhaps as a backlash against Microsoft when its problems occur.
