PRESIDENT AL-BASHIR MEETS IMF OFFICIAL

Khartoum, Sept. 11 (SUNA)- President of the Republic Gen. Omer Al-Bashir
met at his office at the Republican Palace Saturday the visiting Director of
the Middle East Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

President Al-Bashir called on the IMF to cancel sanctions imposed on Sudan,
and to urge the donor countries to write off Sudan's debts and that of other
poor countries.

President Al-Bashir has affirmed the soundness of the economic programme
which is being adopted by Sudan, referring to the positive results which had
been achieved in the past period.

The President expressed appreciation of the recent decision of the IMF on
considering Sudan a cooperative country.

In a press statement to SUNA, the IMF official expressed appreciation for
the performance of the Sudanese economy in the past period, the drop in the
inflation rate to 10% and the increase of the foreign investment in Sudan.

The IMF official called on Sudan to utilize the experience of oil-producing
countries in exploiting oil revenues in creating new jobs and providing
basic services.

He said that the IMF would work to normalize its relations with Sudan,
adding that the IMF would also contribute to normalization of Sudan's
relations with the international and regional finance institutions.

Small steps yet steps they are.
