We in Hong Kong, on an island with no natural resources and six million people, are comparatively more sensitive to the ups and downs of the major currencies, metals and regional politics. Given our currency is tied to the US$, we also have to pay attention to US issues more (probably) than Canadians and Mexicans. It is possibly odd when visitors see the old and young gathered in front of street facing banking monitors tracking the price of Heng Seng Index and gold during times of international tension. HK is a very odd place.
