Mark,

<< American Express is rolling out a "Blue" card which has a chip in it to enable smart card services >>

The American Express "Blue Card" is interesting from several points of view.

First, this American Express card puts AMEX in the revolving credit business and the card is directly competitive with Mastercard and Visa products.

Second the Blue card has both a traditional magnetic stripe for shopping in stores, but also has a smart chip that will hold personal information like shipping addresses and account data a cardholder can give online merchants in a secure manner.

I am under the impression that the card uses the MULTOS OS on the Seimens (Infineon) 66 series chip. The American Express Online Wallet and Blue's Smart Chip Reader that will make online purchases more convenient and secure is "FREE and COMING SOON" according to American Express Blue Web site at:

americanexpress.com

It is not clear what version(s) of reader AMEX will supply but it will probably be a serial port or USB version with perhaps a PCMCIA option. Because the card is ISO-7816 & presumably PC/SC compliant it can be used in PC's already equipped with a smart card reader option like the IBM ThinkPad or versions of the HP notebook line.

As it relates to mobile wireless telephony, a dual slot GSM phone like the new model from Motorola could allow a card holder to make transactions on their mobile. The mobile need not be GSM: no reason why it could not be a WAP enabled CDMA phone with a smart card reader.
