Not too difficult to research at all since the concept has existed for years. A few links follow that about things I'm sure you're already familiar with but have you noticed the one thing that seems to be in common with most? Point-point, as in only one a few intended subscribers per main antenna.

Like any communications setup, there's a limit as to how much information can be sent over a set amount of available bandwidth and if I recall that 2.4 GHZ ISM band that allows unlicensed transmissions of up to 4W ERP (output power + antenna gain) is rather limited in bandwidth thus the real killer - that limited amount of bandwidth divides out between the number of active users.

In other words if you had 1000 people trying to share 100 Mbps of total useable speed from the source they'd only be able to get 100 Kbps of info simultaneously and that's not even considering all the overhead involved.
