Cha2,

Does Gemstar have any involvement at all in two way "interactive" use of TV at least? Curious.

Gemstar has a proprietary two-way RF/IR wireless guide system. One-way will be activated in early 2000 and two-way in 2001. I am told that some of the delay is because the chassis of the TV will need to be changed for interference concerns. The data can be separated into 6 channels (I hope that is the correct terminology) so that it can travel the unused portion of the spectrum. Since you are a Gilder fan you must like that part as he has many times forecasted the intelligent use of the RF spectrum. Anyway, Henry has stated that the cost of this system is 1/100th to 1/1000th that of a telephone line backchannel. More important yet is that it has a national footprint and is independent of the many MSOs and ISPs. This is somewhat empowering IMO.

E commerce transactions will be able to be made without any wires. Neither telephone or STB will be needed. The guide data will be up to the minute accurate. Near real-time E mail will be available as will current news headlines and sports scores. This will all be free to the user.

Just some food for thought. Nothing is written in stone at this time.

Regards
Stew
