Went down to BB today to see if I could find some Athlons....that place is such a zoo! The place was packed (Pentagon City Mall, right across the Potomac from DC). I waded through the crowds to find the computing aisle. I started with the Compaqs, but couldn't find any Athlons. I then turned to the IBM Aptivas and walked down the entire row......nothing. Plenty of K6's...but no Athlon. Finally, I vaguely remembered that others had mentioned that they had seen Athlons at the end of the row facing the greater store sales floor. As described in the Sunday BB ad, it was an Aptiva with an Athlon 550. On the case was a small sticker that read, "Engineering Sample Only for Demonstration Purposes."

But as a long suffering AMD long I still had my fearless (foolish?) optimism. The 1st salesman was completely clueless..."Athlon...what?" The second referred me to a third.....who grabbed the Sunday BB ad off the table. "See that number in the ad?"
"Yes"
"Look up there and if you can find that number.....we've got the computer in stock."
"What about the Compaq?"
"Hmmm.....that's a build to order model."

So I looked upward to see a sea of Aptiva boxes sitting far above my head on a ledge. I walked down the row. And there they were.....at least six...perhaps twice that many if stacked two deep (sorry, couldn't tell).....550 mhz Athlons with large AMD Athlon stickers on each box.

OT: For those who own game software stocks.....they were also sold out of Dreamcasts.....and half the store was asking.

Wish I could provide some anecdote on sales of Athlons...but seeing the boxes in BB gave me a small boost of confidence. Screwdriver shops is one thing......Internet orders another......but ads for CC and BB on Sunday.....that's a lot of retail outlets to supply. Sounds like the MIAthlon has been rescued by Chuck or Sly...
