If my memory serves me

Small rodent like mammals evolved in the last (Jurassic?) age of dinosaurs. These mammals lived on the peripherial of nomadic dinosaur camps, in cold weather climates.

The theory goes that after the last major biosphere die off (approx 25 million years ago), the rodent/mammals handled the cooler tempurates better because of their smaller size, scavanger diet, and metabolism.

Hence, they lived through the die off, spent several million years adapting to an enviorment almost devoid of competition. And about 1 million years ago, the equivilant of a really smart chimpanze picked up a stick, gnawed the end into a point, and started showing others how to use tools.
