I am using "complex" in its mathematical sense. A complex number consists of a real number plus an imaginary number: a+bi, where
i = sqrt(-1)

Note that 1*1=1 and (-1)*(-1)=1, so the square root of -1 cannot be represented as an ordinary positive or negative number; it has to be given its own unit. The common mathematical symbol for this unit is i.

The equation I gave has a solution at w=-12.31 as well as w=+12.31. In this case, suppose the origin of the w-axis were placed at the left wall of the alley. Now suppose the right wall were moved steadily leftward until it passed THROUGH the left wall and continued until it was 12.31 feet to the left of what was the original left wall. (Also, assume the ladders are attached to the base of the walls but the tops of the ladders are free to move and do so as the walls move.) That is the negative solution.
