Look To Sell Detroit Casino Interests
Three prominent MotorCity casino investors - including the two leading African Americans of the Detroit casino movement - are expected to sell out their shares in the group because they may not meet tough licensing standards.
Herb Strather, Nellie Varner and Mike Malik are negotiating to sell their casino interests, according to sources close to the deals. The three investors could not be reached, and a spokesman for MotorCity declined comment. Malik, a manager of a Native American casino in Manistee, has had federal tax problems that would likely prevent him from obtaining a casino license, sources familiar with the state's licensing investigation said. Notes and Debentures to 'BBB'
Duff & Phelps Credit Rating Co. (DCR) has downgraded its rating on Mirage Resorts, Inc.'s senior notes and debentures from 'BBB+' (Triple-B-Plus) to 'BBB' (Triple-B). This rating action affects $950 million of debt securities. At the same time, DCR has reaffirmed the company's commercial paper rating at 'D-2' (D-Two). The outlook is stable.
The downgrade is largely attributable to the company's weakened credit protection measures as a result of lower-than-expected cash flow from its Las Vegas casino properties, particularly in light of the strong current fundamentals of the Las Vegas market, as well as a weaker-than-anticipated start at the company's recently opened Beau Rivage Biloxi casino resort. By Turncoats, Young Hotheads And The Law
During the glory days of the Philadelphia mob in the 1960s and '70s, the wiseguys were kept in line by the "Docile Don" - Angelo Bruno, who led with quiet authority and preferred to keep most violence out of public view.
But the loyalty and discipline of the Bruno regime are long gone. And the Philly mob is on its last, broken legs. Bruno was gunned down in a car in front of his home in 1980, and the void was filled by young hotheads. Their power soon faded, thanks to their own inexperience, turncoats and tough new racketeering laws. [Read The Full Article...]
