Well, I think that the comment about a teacher's amount of time spent with each student is probably a part of the key.

Another thought: One of the best math teachers I ever had was a woman who had to work hard at it herself. She had learned to explain things in many different ways until light finally broke for everyone. She had also learned that students can help teach one another and encouraged us to work together.

Maybe I was simply lucky....
