It could be that you were lucky....I tutored a remedial math course at a community college once. The students had programmed learning texts, and there was a professor sitting around, and a college student (such as myself), both prepared to help the struggling. Also, some would meet me at the library for extra help. Although some students progressed without a lot of help, some found every bit of it agonizing. It is an interesting exercise trying to explain long division to a 40-something woman who has decided to go back to school, and can't remember much of anything. You are right, being good at it can be an initial disadvantage, because it is difficult to imagine what the problem is. After awhile, though, with good will and an effort to draw them out, one can usually figure out something that will help to clarify.....
