ynot:" consumers 'must' buy the new chips... "

...we certainly hope so {grin}

>have you heard anything on the product side ?

...only that INTC wants to get into/expand it's comm / signal processing chips - they're prolly lookin' at TXN's market share; all the growth in CSCO/LU/NT/ALA cell- and tel-equipment business.

Other rumours "in the channel" (from Computer Reseller News industry 'zine) is that INTC wants to make "white box laptops" possible by offering a generic laptop chipset.

MSFT's 'Windows 2000' will hopefully be one of those "must upgrade" product cycles, like Windows95 was.

But SUNW is going in the other direction - offering "cheap PC's" that are, in effect nothing more than smart terminals, based on HTML/JAVA rather than ASCII/ANSI. Ironically, the internet has the effect of reducing the need for local computer power, while increasing the need for bandwidth. We appear to be going full-circle, back to the days of "time-sharing" - with smart terminals hanging off of huge, central "servers". Doubtful that anyone under the age of 30 can remember what that was like (^_^)
