BTW, almost always one would see Elizabeth Seton depicted in habit with the bonnet. Do you remember when she was canonized and The New York Times front cover had a portrait of her as a young woman? My mother literally gasped, "That's Seton! Good God, right down to that weird skin!"

I thought that Seton's skin was fascinating, it was so extraordinarily white. My mother, who was herself extremely fair, characterized Seton's skin color as looking "like the underbelly of a fish."
