Yeah, you're right, the State should be the sole coercer.

I'm having a little difficulty coming up with my list of good books that moved the public en masse. I wanted to limit it to more modern times, so I am not considering Aquinas, Augustine,et al. So far I'm thinking of books that were reactions to social forces or events, like Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. There is no conservative equivalent to The Communist Manifesto or Coming of Age in Samoa. The sources of conservative wisdom are custom, convention, and tradition. Conservatives don't believe wisdom springs from a book of theoretical abstractions. I'm still kicking it around.
