Ken, first of all you should be familiar with the new issues.. I have only shorted a handful of 'new' issues and they were very high volume. I'm usually on the phone asking a lot of questions and I short pretty early in the morning when the supply is fresher. I also don't use Level II for shorting, but I have been told that could improve the shorts. I don't short that much to bother with level II.

I have had some trouble with NTOP but I think it was my own fault. I Sometimes there is no stock to short but I've only found that with NTOP.. A.B. Watley is just as good for short as for long, but I have only been shorting for about 3 months. I have no idea about some of the others. The main thing is not the amount of stock to short but the execution, I've been out of shorts in 2-7 seconds and have never been caught in a squeeze.

I have an account with MB trading which I rarely use, but they say that MB has 'more short' stock available than others, but I have not tested that out in practice. I have 4 accounts all together so I can't enjoy real tick for free but before you begin shorting earnestly you might want to check out the Level II.

I still use Dreyfus for options, but as I rarely trade options that account is just sitting with too much money and underutilized. I never took to the time to test them out for shorting.. You might want to make some phone calls or ask traders who short constantly if they agree that A.B. Watley is the best.. I'm so used to them that changing or adding a broker I usually let the other broker account stagnate in the end.
