Self aware beings are not a given outcome. - I'm not so sure about that. If you put the right chemical together, hemoglobin is a predetermined outcome, so why should not the nature of evolution be such that intelligence is not a predetermined outcome of natural selection. There is no reason not to believe that intelligence isn't such a great survival strategy that it wouldn't be come across sooner or later. It's called convergent evolution.
