My perception is that this, like everything else, is tremendously competitive, and subject to hype and bribery. Not necessarily outright bribery, but sucking up kinds of bribery. You have to scope it out way in advance. I think if I'd played it differently, Ben would have got into TJ (Thomas Jefferson), if only I'd made him get involved in summer science type activities. Kids that he knew that had zero interest in science got in, based, as far as I can see, on better grades and a better resume. I thought all that stuff sucked, but now I wish I'd done it. Been more active in the PTA, instead of just writing a big check. Been more involved in all that stuff. I don't know what it's like where you are, but here it's cut throat. You can turn up your nose, or get down in the dirt. It's not the world we grew up in. |
