Tech2000, CNBC's Bob Pisani reported today that he talked with EMC after they were upgraded by an analyst today. (I believe it was a Bank of America analyst.) EMC said that they would have a normal year end period and didn't see a material Y2K effect on their business. This comment was on top of what Pisani had said earlier about certain software companies expousing similar no material effects on their business.

It could be that the hype over Y2K is way overblown and if so, the realization that it will be a non-event may entice the sideline cash into the market.

Also, Solectron reported a better than expected (one cent) earnings after the bell. They are are major component manufacturer and an early indicator as to the health of the tech market for the third quarter. Oracle will also report their results tomorrow which will give us an additional early indicator.

At this point, fear of Y2K will ease. However, rising interest rates and inflationary fears may dominate trading in the foreseeable future and hold the market in check, or even cause a correction.
