He was certainly under siege. I guess when you're under siege you become conservative. In the last years of the 19th century Pope Leo XIII recast the whole Index legislation, making it more definite, and mitigating it in many points.

People today, especially non-Catholics, think that if a Catholic read one of the books he was excommunicated or some harsh sanction would be imposed. I don't believe that was ever the case.

It wasn't a new idea, either. The council of Nicea in 325 proscribed the use of Arius' book Thalia, and there have been similar proscriptions through the ages.
