Sony Schedules Rollout of Playstation 2

By BLOOMBERG NEWS

TOKYO -- The Sony Corporation said Monday that it
would begin selling a machine destined to replace its
Playstation home video game console in Japan on March 4,
much later than most analysts had expected.

The Playstation 2, which will be priced at 39,800 yen
($368), will come with a digital videodisk player capable of
playing movies and music, a CD-ROM and a port to connect
to the Internet. Existing Playstation software can be used
on the new player.

Sony said in March that it planned to begin selling the
machine in Japan between December 1999 and March 2000,
though most analysts had expected the console to be ready
by Jan. 23.

The later release date has raised questions about the
company's ability to mass-produce enough of the
sophisticated chips that power the new machine to get it
into stores by the new year.

The company plans to release Playstation 2 in Asia next
summer and in the United States and Europe in the fall of
2000.
