Dell to Use cXML to Connect its Website to Ariba Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Ariba, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARBA),
the leader in business-to-business eCommerce solutions for operating
resources, today announced that Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL) will
sell its products through the Ariba(R) Network(TM) eCommerce service. Ariba
and Dell will also collaborate on the continued development of Commerce XML
(cXML), an emerging Internet standard for exchanging supplier content and
transaction information between buyers and suppliers.
Dell will make its products and services available to buying organizations
using cXML and the Ariba Network service, a shared Internet service that
integrates business buyers, suppliers and service providers. This will
provide the opportunity for joint Ariba and Dell customers to gain additional
cost savings, efficiencies, and convenience in acquiring Dell computer
products.
As one of more than 80 Ariba Supplier Link members, Dell gains an
additional eCommerce distribution channel to domestic and international
corporate buyers using Ariba eCommerce solutions. There are currently over
forty Global 2000 companies in Ariba's customer base representing over
US$100 billion in aggregate spending on all operating resources. Ariba
customers include Andersen Consulting, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Chevron, Cisco,
FedEx, General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, Lucent, Merck, MCI WorldCom, Nestle,
Philips, SAirGroup, Sonoco, Staples, Transamerica, U S WEST, and Visa.
Dell will add standard XML-based cXML capabilities to its existing
website, enabling Ariba users to use the Ariba Internet Catalog feature to
directly view and access the Dell website, its latest products and
configurations, and its Dell Premier Pages(TM) Service all from within the
Ariba solution. By providing access to Dell Premier Pages within the Ariba
Network service, purchasing information is captured and managed by the Ariba
solution and users need not leave the Ariba user interface. This allows Dell
to leverage its eCommerce capabilities, dynamic content and brand image while
allowing the buying organization to maintain control of its purchasing
processes, such as approvals and accounting, through the intranet-based Ariba
ORMS(TM) application.
Using Dell Premier Pages through the cXML-enabled Ariba Internet Catalog,
customers can view their contracted discount pricing, configure Dell products,
access service and support information customized to the products they own,
confirm daily order and manufacturing status for systems.
"We are pleased to add Dell, a true pioneer and leader in sell-side
business-to-business eCommerce, to the network of suppliers participating in
the Ariba Network service," said Keith Krach, president and CEO at Ariba. "By
making Dell computer product information and the Dell shopping experience
readily available to all organizations that use Ariba eCommerce solutions,
Ariba and Dell will jointly provide our clients with more efficient means of
doing business."
