Data General's CLARiiON Division Unveils Entry-level Full Fibre Channel Storage Solution - the CLARiiON FC5300

Business/Technology Editors
SOUTHBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--CLARiiON FC5300 Offers High Performance, High Availability and Scalable Full Fibre Channel Storage at Industry's Lowest Price

Data General Corporation's CLARiiON(R) Storage Division today unveiled the CLARiiON FC5300, a powerful new entry-level addition to its industry-leading family of full Fibre Channel storage solutions.
The CLARiiON FC5300, Data General's third generation of full Fibre Channel storage, has been tailored for sophisticated small-to-medium sized applications where performance and uptime are critical. With its best-in-class enterprise functionality, including high performance, centralized management, mirrored cache and redundant storage processors, FC5300 is ideal for distributed storage environments, including storage area networks (SANs).
Based on proven CLARiiON FC5000 Series modular architecture, the CLARiiON FC5300 delivers full Fibre Channel at both the host and disk levels at the industry's lowest price for a full Fibre Channel solution. Depending upon customer needs, the FC5300 can grow from three Fibre Channel disk drives to 30 drives, providing users with up to one terabyte of high availability storage. The FC5300 also can be upgraded, without having to be taken down, to larger multi-terabyte CLARiiON FC5500 or FC5700 solutions as the user's storage needs grow.
"Data General CLARiiON continues to expand the breadth of products based on Fibre Channel technology," said John McArthur, IDC's Program Director for Storage Research. "The CLARiiON FC5300 is an appropriate solution for companies running mission-critical applications in environments such as OLTP, data warehousing, e-mail, Web servers and print servers."
"With this new CLARiiON solution we are also introducing the `virtual centralization' of storage, allowing for distributed high availability storage spread across several geographical locations to be centrally managed with our powerful Navisphere software," said Joanne Masingill, vice president of CLARiiON marketing at Data General. "Entry-level enterprise storage customers can be certain that they are receiving the full benefits of Fibre Channel storage with the FC5300 - high performance, high availability, scalability and investment protection - and the tools to comfortably grow and manage a valuable distributed storage infrastructure."
Scott Fraser, director of technical operations at Discovery Communications, Inc. (The Discovery Channel), said, "Our discovery.com Web site requires the highest level of performance and data availability for supporting hourly Web site updates. As such, we conducted an extensive evaluation of RAID storage solutions and concluded that the CLARiiON FC5300 surpassed all our requirements, in addition to providing the most cost effective distributed storage solution."
Chris Yetman, director, Customer Services Delivery for GTE Internetworking, noted, "As a leading ISP, GTE Internetworking provides services ranging from high-speed Internet access, security and sophisticated Web and application hosting. Our customers rely on our storage infrastructure to be always available and fast. We're using CLARiiON FC5300 storage solutions that are designed for this demanding environment and provide us with the ability to build a cost-effective, full Fibre Channel storage infrastructure that can grow with us."

Pricing and Availability

The CLARiiON FC5300 full Fibre Channel disk array, which is immediately available, starts at a list price of approximately $20,000. A high-end system with 30 drives, providing more than a terabyte of storage, sells for less than $200,000. For more information please call 1-800-67-ARRAY or visit www.clariion.com.
