The eternal human question, espoused by every 5 year old, "Why?"
I already stated, I don't find a good theory of why we lost our body hair. Personaly, I think it was divine intervention, or aliens, hehe.
But, the body fat issue is a more recent development. Tribal Africans have noticiably less fat then swarthy caucasions. It is likely our increase in external fat was an adaptation to Cro-Magnon and Neaderthal during the last ice age.
The larnyx is another good mystery. By descending, it makes us very likely to choke to death on our tongues. But, I've heard that it was a Savannah adaptation.
By descending, it allows us to use more of the throat as a resounce chamber, making louder, deeper sounds that carry nicely over long distance in warm, humid air. Kind of like an internal battle drum. To be honest, I don't like this theory either though.
btw, what do you think about multiple point evolution theory, that humans appeared in Africa, Indonesia, and China at the same time? A kind of off shoot of parrell evolution. |
