The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail sales for August adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $252.4 billion, an increase of 1.2 percent (±0.7%) from the previous month and up 10.6 percent (±0.9%) from August 1998. Total sales for the June through August period were up 9.1 percent (±0.7%) from the same period a year ago. The June to July 1999 percent change was revised from +0.7 percent (±0.7%) to +1.0
percent (±0.3%).

Current Account for Q2 = -80.7b

The U.S. current-account deficit--the combined balances on trade in goods and services, income, and net unilateral current transfers--increased to $80.7 billion in the second quarter from $68.7 billion (revised) in the first, according to preliminary estimates of the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis. The increase was accounted for by a large increase in the deficit on goods and services, a very small increase in the deficit on income, and higher net unilateral current transfers.
