Lan, That sounds like a proper settlement. The way to avoid the problem is not to trade without sufficient funds. There is no compromise or excuses. Therefore the SEC forcing your broker to break the trade was the proper thing to do. As you said, like it never happened.

The IRS should have no problem with this (or in most cases, even any knowledge that it happened)

You did the right thing.
