Then it is forced to develop tools to take advantage of its surroundings, or become extinct.
This is the story of all evolution. Life becomming more likely to survive because it is preserving information for future generations. For billions of years the only information which one generation could pass to the next was in it's DNA. Sentience has added a whole new dimension to the information that is passed. Humans are effected by the evolutionary theories of Lamark, they can obtain aquired characteristics and pass them to the next generation.
