Charley,

The book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was widely read after
publication and is thought to have been one of the
causes of the American Civil War. These days though,
it seems like CNN cameras trigger action. People have
to see something on television before they act. Books
no longer have any impact on the American psyche.
