FVC.COM Debuts First Broadband Video Services for Telecommunications Carriers; Qwest Demonstrates FVC.COM Interactive Video Portal at NetWorld + Interop
Business Wire - September 14, 1999 11:05
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--Today FVC.COM (NASDAQ:FVCX) announced the launch of its Broadband Video Services which enable telecommunications carriers and service providers to deliver a comprehensive set of video applications over their broadband networks. FVC.COM is currently deploying proof-of-concept and internal pilots with several major carriers around the world, an important milestone in the process of bringing these new services to market. These services are being demonstrated by Qwest Communications International, Inc. (NASDAQ:QWST) in their booth at Networld + Interop Atlanta this week.
FVC.COM's Video Services enable carriers to offer a suite of real-time interactive video applications including video calls, video conferences, video mail and video events. These applications will be delivered to customers using FVC.COM's Video Operations Center, web-based Video Portal, and the extensive range of broadband video systems developed by FVC.COM over the past five years. The accelerating implementation of broadband infrastructure, combined with the declining cost of video technology and the ease-of-use of web browsers, has finally made it possible to deploy Broadband Video Services on a large scale.
"Within two years virtually all carriers will be delivering video services over their broadband networks," explains Howard Anderson, Founder and President of Yankee Group. "This sets the stage for applications such as video call centers or mobile video offices, making video as important to the enterprise as voice and data are today. FVC.COM pioneered the deployment of real time video over broadband and is years ahead."
Analysts estimate that the market for video services to the enterprise is poised to grow from $6 billion in 1999 to over $20 billion by 2003. The widespread deployment of fiber networks, combined with the advancements in real-time video technology, has created the ideal environment for the mainstream adoption of broadband video services. Real-time interactive video applications can now expand from the 220,000 video room systems currently installed to the more than 200 million networked PCs installed in enterprises today.
"Communications technologies, such as fax and cellular phones, have a way of exploding in popularity as soon as they become easy-to-use, affordable productivity tools for business. Ultimately prices migrate down and the technology takes off at the consumer level," said Ralph Ungermann, Chairman of FVC.COM. "Video is now poised to follow this trend."
"FVC.COM is becoming the service provider to the carriers," explains Rich Beyer, President and CEO of FVC.COM. "Telecommunications companies, eager to offer high revenue growth services over their broadband infrastructure, are expanding beyond their current voice and data offerings to deliver video applications to their customers. By working with FVC.COM, carriers can deploy our Broadband Video Services to their customers, enhancing their service offerings and accelerating their revenue growth in a short period of time."
Broadband Video Services
FVC.COM's Broadband Video Services enable carriers to drive their revenue growth by expanding their value added services. By implementing FVC.COM's services over their IP networks, carriers can now offer:
- video calls - live calls made between two people - video conferences - calls involving up to several participants simultaneously; calls can be scheduled or made on the fly - video mail - callers can leave a message when the call is not answered - video events - real-time activities, such as marketing launches, corporate communications sessions, etc. - conference overflow - broadcasting live or stored meetings out to multiple sites at once - recording and playback - recording live video meetings as they occur for playback on demand later
FVC.COM's Video Portal
End users can now place a live video call, schedule a multi-person video conference, or view previously-stored video on demand all from a web-based browser using the Video Portal developed by FVC.COM. The customizable portal uses a common interface for both PCs and room systems.
"The web is making video applications easily accessible in much the same way it expanded the reach of e-mail and e-commerce," comments Rich Beyer. "Our Video Portal brings point-and-click simplicity to an array of video services, and should enable video to be integrated into a wide range of e-commerce applications."
FVC.COM's Video Operations Center (VOC)
FVC.COM has built the platform to deliver managed video services on a remote basis to carriers. Through a broadband connection to FVC.COM's Video Operations Center, carriers can take advantage of the speed and flexibility of remote hosting.
The Video Operations Center provides carriers with virtually unlimited scalability along with timely system upgrades including:
- Multipoint conference hosting - Web portal servers - Gatekeepers - Operations support, billing services - Gateways to ISDN systems
