Joan, What an excellent, well thought out post. You are right about GNET should lead or be an AOL, YHOO, etc. clone Sheep . GNET and SI should not be "AOL'S DOLLY".
I thank you for pointing this out as this is what is really bothering me about SI. I "found" GNET BEFORE it was an IPO as you know. I was researching and investing in internets early on and almost the whole AOL board we had then thought I was nuts. Do you remember Joan me telling everyone to buy GNET then? How did I know back then that GNET would return over 2500% in two years?
Simple, GNET was "different" than many other portals. When Russell used some of my shareholder dollars to buy SI, I told everyone then that "all great portals have a top rated PF site", I think Russ paid 33 million for SI back then, that Russ can shop.
What I have noticed about GNET AND SI is that as more time goes by, they lose more of that company we once knew feel and they seem to want to be AOL DOLLY clones.
GNET and SI management BLUE has news for you. First you are making some really stupid moves as of late. Give some people a little power and it goes right to their heads. Let me as one person explain why you are pissing me off and let's get some things straight.
You people have NO right to censor our board as you did. To remove it from the SI hot list to hide the truth, that is what corporate weasels do. You have NO right to alter my PERSONAL profile in any way. What you are doing is $hit business, business so bad it stinks.
The only photo I have from my beret days is in (not on) my desk. I'm 18 or 19 years old, in camo and boonie hat (no unit, name, etc. patches). I'm in a LZ carved out of the jungle, waiting on a slick (helicopter) to pull us out. The jungle weeds behind me are 20 feet tall. In my eyes, the look most medics had. Why do think I was there and not smokin' dope in a college dorm, getting laid in the days of free love?
I was kid then but I wasn't stupid. If anyone out there thinks I gave three years of my life for the little Yellow Man, you are crazy. Ideas are why I served. I thought all people should have the freedom I was born with. Freedom is very important to me, that's what people die for.
So when some new money internet millionaire gets a false sense of power and wants to tell me what I can say or do, they can GFO (go find oysters). SI needs to learn that they are driving people away each time they take a freedom away or hand out an ego driven suspension.
That is why people leave and why we are sitting on techride.com Go ahead SI you just keep it up and we Techriders will fold our tent and move on. We were looking for a home when we found this one. We already have our next one not to mention a secret fishing hole I found after I was suspended for calling a moron a moron.
GNET please take the lead. Please make SI realize they are not that important, not doing brain surgery. SI don't be so serious, none of this is. War is serious, cancer is serious, who uses what for a logo photo is not. Stop trying to control people or they will leave.
GNET please make the internet a place of more freedom, not less. If the new SI really means more corporate control then I'll take the old.
