Nortel Networks Puts an End to One Size Fits All' Internet Services with Introduction of First Policy Services Solution Built Exclusively For Service Providers
Enables Service Providers to Deliver Personalized Internet
Services to Customers
ATLANTA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) today introduced Preside Policy Services, new software that will do for IP services what the web did for merchandising - provide a solid understanding of customer preferences; deliver tailored services specific to each customer; and leverage creative, new self-service tools.
With Preside Policy Services, service providers can consolidate customers' service information, provide rapid service activation and delivery, and customize service packages and billing to meet individual business and consumer needs.
Since we offer a set of retail and wholesale services to a broad range of sophisticated customers, we need the flexibility to create tailored service packages,'' said Gary Disher, chief technology officer for AGIS, a leading provider of high-speed, high-capacity Internet and data services based in Bethesda, Maryland. ''With Preside Policy Services, Nortel Networks enables us to offer new services quickly -and in our operational trials it is significantly simplifying our operations processes.''
Preside Policy Services is the first product announced in Nortel Networks' service-enabling software portfolio designed to help service providers unlock the revenue potential of the Internet.
We are putting profit potential into what is, for many, the profit-less Internet,'' said Robert Pfeffer, president, Core Networks, Nortel Networks. ''With Preside Policy Services we are creating a bridge from today's best-effort networks to a service, directory-enabled network that allows service providers to optimize and accelerate their service delivery.''
The directory is key for service providers to consolidate the user and service information needed to create the rich customer relationships that will differentiate them from competitors. By working with a range of open directory technologies, Preside Policy Services enables the creation of tailored applications and network services for specific market and customer needs.
To ensure service providers can easily manage the service relationship with their customers, Nortel Networks is teaming up with a leader in Internet service commerce solutions, Portal Software.
We share the goal of helping our IP service provider customers participate more fully in the IP services space,'' said Jill Kyte, senior director, Strategic Alliances, Portal Software Inc.. ''Combining Portal's Infranet customer management and billing system with Nortel Networks' Preside Policy Services, results in a holistic solution for service providers to create and deliver value-added IP services and service packages.'' In addition to creating new, profitable revenue steams, Preside Policy Services provides significant cost savings. The fully-automated tools reduce the need for high-priced, scare-skilledresources.
Preside Policy Services is available today to provide the foundation for delivering personal IP services, through the following:
- Preside Internet Name and Address Management: Consolidates and
simplifies the management of IP services with an easy-to-use tool for
address administration, Domain Name Services and Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol.
- Preside Radius: Provides a powerful capability for carriers to
introduce retail, wholesale or partially-outsourced remote access
services in addition to providing leading-edge support of virtual
private networks (VPNs), prepaid services, roaming and usage-based
billing.
- Preside Quality-of-Service (QoS): Provides a comprehensive priority
management solution for the provisioning, enforcement and verification
of Differentiated Services (DiffServ) traffic on a range of routing
technologies, including Nortel Networks' router portfolio and legacy
third party routers.
To be successful in today's highly competitive public services marketplace, service providers must move beyond the ''one size fits all'' Internet service paradigm,'' said Peter Carbone, general manager of IP Service and Policy Products, Nortel Networks. ''By emulating the success of the new generation of ebook stores and other web vendors, service providers can create a new, personalized IP service experience.''
